Kali Chandrasegaram
A multi-disciplined, experimental dancer and choreographer, working across many genres from Indian classical Odissi to contemporary. I believe in dance as a personal journey of the soul for self and communal awareness. Originally from Malaysia where diversity is ingrained, integrating differences is in my veins. I have been an artist in the UK Contemporary South Asian Odissi scene and have worked for many of the genre's leading companies and organisations like Kala The Arts for over 15 years performing on various ambitious projects , Choreographing alongside the artistic director teaching dance workshops in schools and for all ages and abilities.
Worked in communities of different ethnic origins, in libraries of little towns, for older people in care homes, dance and disability, dance and dementia and dance for refugees. Performing nationally and internationally from the proscenium to in a flowing river, dancing without boundaries. In the lockdown I have ventured into creating dance and editing dance videos for the digital stage. Worked with Kala The Arts on a digital project Deepam in lockdown and Reading museums and Council. Recently I worked on their flagship project Deepali -Light it up and it proved to be one of the outdoor largest crowds I danced for in Hampshire.
“Continually surprising” The Stage
"Kali Chandrasegaram had an air of power and control. He reflected the balance between the feminine and masculine in a highly engaging routine." Stephen Oliver (North East Theatre Guide)

I have now been working with Kala The Arts for almost 10 years. As a Contemporary Kathak artist I have played an important role in developing Kathak and various projects for the organisation. I have created and led projects with Kala The arts including developing workshops for hard-to-reach audiences, I feel the organisation has grown immensely and plays an integral part in retaining the South Asian Arts, Culture and Heritage in Hampshire and this region.
To my knowledge, it is and has been one of the largest organisations which has worked with various Professional Artists and have provided Artists with the support for Professional Development over many years. It has also conducted workshops in various community settings, including schools, colleges, etc. many of which have been performance lead, in order to educate and entertain participants of all ages. Kala The Arts has most of all has been diverse and inclusive in its approach to making South Asian Arts highly accessible and creative to a range of audiences and participants, many of whom have not only appreciated but have applauded and praised Kala The Arts for its efforts and success in doing so.
