This was an exciting flagship project initiated and led by Kala The Arts. It consisted of several elements, workshops, a new commission, a parade through the town centre, giant puppets, dhol drummers, followed by a range of professional and community performances in the outdoor amphitheatre. 4 local Arts organisations were part of this project and for the 1st time National organisations Walk The Plank, Cirque Bijou, Global Grooves were involved working in Basingstoke. Same Sky and Zeal who have worked in other productions were part of this and helped a lot. KTA worked with 19 organisations as part of this project. Thanks to Basingstoke and Deane events team.
The parade had some 2000+ participants and was one of the largest seen in recent years. Organised by Kala The Arts with funding from Arts Council England and supported by B&DBC. The overall figures for the Deepali light it up was 8500 + audiences . Social media figures 11,374.
Comments and engagement:
“Celebrating our borough’s rich diversity is incredibly important and I am delighted that we have been able to work with Kala the Arts to showcase Diwali celebrations in the heart of the town for the first time this year.
I hope residents of all ages across the borough will come and enjoy the breathtaking festival of light parade, which symbolises hope for everyone as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, and learn why Diwali is so important.” Cllr Simon Bound, B&DBC Cabinet Member for Communities, Planning and Infrastructure
"Deepali / Diwali in partnership with Love Basingstoke I really believe was the BEST outdoor event we have had in Basingstoke in recent years" - Hannah Williams
“It was a lifetime experience that will remembered. This was the bigger cultural parade I ever since in Basingstoke since 2009. Good to see so many people for involved and creating such a beautiful event.
It truest made me love Basingstoke even more. This is now the next big events I am looking forward to next year”. – Hiro
"The huge lit-up Puppets is something I have only ever seen on film. I really believe it was the BEST outdoor event we have had in Basingstoke in recent years.
It reminded me of the Brian Dearling Carnival Parades that we used to have here in the 70’s and 80’s which was a great Community Event raising money to support." – Hannah
"Thank you for inviting me the Festival of Light festivities. It was a very enjoyable and memorable event, and I am looking forward to next year! The participation of so many young children was particularly heart warming to see." Cllr Vaux
“Being part of the Deepali festival light it up was a defining moment for our dancers this year. Many of them said it was the most exciting experience they had had in their school lives. They learnt so many new skills but most importantly they successfully performed in front of a huge audience. This has given the children new found confidence to work hard and pursue new ideas even if it appears tricky and unknown. We cannot thank Kala the Arts enough for this opportunity as this has had a positive effect throughout the school”. Emma Head of Year 6
"Diwali in Basingstoke 2021 was better than Diwali in London @ Trafalgar Square 2021 thank you" – Bikram Balgokulam
"As someone who isn’t Indian myself, I felt completely welcome to be a part of the celebrations. Making this a mainstream event in Basingstoke will undoubtedly go a long way to promote cultural cohesion in the town. Thank you Kala The Arts and Basingstoke council!" Hannah Leat
"I learnt a lot from our two B@DBC events and culture officers Ross and Donna who helped me a lot to lead the project and their partnership support thank you so much" – Sushmita
"The atmosphere was so uplifting and inspiring getting communities together, we stayed till the end and kept
talking about it for a whole week" – Dr Morar
