Parampara
Parampara (meaning 'traditions') is an exciting new project looking at the heritage of Odissi Dance within Hampshire. Kala The Arts has worked, and will continue to work, with a number of community and school groups accross Hampshire sharing the traditionsn of Odissi. Odissi is one of eight classical dance forms to originate from India and comes from the state of Orissa in Eastern India. It is thought to be one of the oldest surviving dance forms in existence.
Groups take part in dance and music workshops as well as some older members sharing their experiences and memories of Odissi Dance at celebratory events and festivals. The groups also have the chance to see traditional clothing and develop an understanding of why and how each item is worn.
Participants are invited to perform at Parampara events, giving them the opportunity to share what they have learnt and achieved with their family, friends and members of the public. This develops performance and communication skills as well as increasing self esteem and confidence through dance.
'It was a completely new experience for the children. They saw how much fun it was and how controlled they had to be to work together to create the right effect.' - Jo Binmore, Fort Hill Community School
Over the course of the project the information gained and developed will be displayed in libraries, community centres and schools. We are also developing a DVD and informaion booklet, documenting our findings, for all schools and community groups in Hampshire. This DVD and booklet (available in early Spring 2013), will share the history of Odissi and the heritage it holds within Hampshire.
Parampara is for people of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds - it's not necessary to have any dance experience to be a part of the project.
