Romance with Meghdoot
Haymarket Theatre - 3rd March 2010
This project saw four Hampshire schools perform, Marnel Infant and Marnel Junior schools, Castle Hill Infant school and Everest College alongside some of our professional artists at the Haymarket Theatre in Basingstoke. This was an evening of live music and dance that combined performances by our professional perfomers, Prashanti (Kala The Arts' Youth Dance group) and work developed in collaboration with the four schools. Each of these schools created their own perfomances through workshops with our professional dancers and developed a wonderfully diverse range of work drawing inspiration from Bollywood and Slumdog Millionaire to dreams and imagination.
The show was fantastically well received and attended and we are delighted to say that as a result of its success we have been invited to be an Anvil Arts Associate for 2010-11 and 2011-12
What the participants and audience say…
‘I particularly liked seeing such a huge age range in terms of performers on stage. It was lovely to see Primary School aged children performing alongside adults - and all ages in between. I think this is particularly important as it enables young people to identify their own potential progression.’
Sophie Amstell - Youth Dance Strategy Manager, South East. Hampshire Dance
‘Projects like this contribute to great ‘arts’ in Basingstoke. Parents were delighted. They love watching their children perform. The words ‘excellent’ were used a lot.’
Headteacher of Marnel Junior School, Basingstoke.
‘The project brought together children from different ethnic backgrounds who worked together gaining insight into one specific area of Indian culture. It raised the profile and self esteem of Indian children within the community. It provided opportunities for the children to perform and for the whole school to be the audience. It provided great cause for celebration. All of the children experienced a great sense of achievement. For one child whose attendance is poor it has improved her attendance considerably as she obviously enjoyed it.’
Headteacher of Marnel Infants school, Basingstoke.
‘I thought it was great and it was a good opportunity to get us healthy and fit and I would like to say thank-you to Sushmita and Geeta for teaching us such a great dance.’
Pupil from Castle Hill Junior School, Basingstoke
